One of the joys of living in the country is that we have no rubbish collection.  I burn what I can, recycle what I can (but here you can only recycle #1 and #2 plastic, paper/cardboard and cans).  The rest of your stuff?  That can be a problem.

Locally there is a company who rents out rubbish containers – little skips like many restaurants use.  They also have bigger ones and huge ones.  Well, several months ago I got one.  It’s two cubic yards (for you engineers out there, and for the rest of you that means it’s rather small for a skip) and usually I can go 3 or 4 months without it being emptied.  Now that we are moving I decided that it might be a good idea to have them replace this little one with a medium sized one (about 3 times the size) so I stopped by the office earlier this week to arrange it.  Not a problem, but since they only come my way once a week it would have to wait until Friday.  No problem, says I and then I paid for it.

Well, today has come and all but gone, and in spite of a reassuring telephone call with them I have no replacement skip.  And my little one is full to over-flowing.  Since we leave next Friday I’m going to have to go to town Monday and do some serious begging!!

Next place I live will have city/town/village sponsored rubbish pick up at least weekly!

  1. We don’t have garbage pick up here in the wilds of Provence. We have to lug it up a hill to the neighborhood garbage area-recyclables too.
