Unexpected pleasures

A friend and colleague returned this week from a business trip and mini-vacation to the US. Today he gave me this, letting me know it was an early retirement gift.

This picture does not begin to do it justice (and the round bit on the silver side is the same as opposite, it just didn’t photo well). It looks like Venetian glass. Whatever it is I LOVE it and I was so delightfully surprised!
